DIY: Nautical Wall Hanging
Still, have a plain bathroom wall with just a mirror in front of your wash basin???? Why keep it that way, when you can easily make a nice jaunty wall hanging that provides a safe storage space for all those important little odds and ends that are always astray. This DIY Hung in the bathroom, it makes the ideal place to keep nail varnish and cotton balls.
Before we get started, let’s gather all the material that we will be needing to have your master arts ready.
- Wallpaper Paste
- Heavy Corrugated Cardboard
- PVA(white) Glue
- Masking Tape
- White emulsion (latex) paint
- Acrylic Paints
- Acrylic Spray Varnish
- Picture- Hanging Eyelet
- Container for wallpaper paste
- Strong Scissors
- Marker Pen
- Small Decorators Paintbrushes
- Fine- Grade Sandpaper
- Fine Artist’s Paintbrush
- Paint-Mixing Container
So, now since you now know what we need, let gather the stuff and start our DIY project.
The first step is to blow up a balloon fully to make a firm base for the papier-mache. See told ya it was so easy. Now comes the messy part, pour the PVA white glue in the ratio of 3:1. Tear the newspaper into approximate 2.5 cm strips and soak it into the paste. Cover 2/3rd of the balloon in five layers of the paper soaked in the paste.
Leave the papier-mache to dry out in the sun or any warm place. Once completely dry let just burst the balloon using scissors and remove the balloon. Now here be careful while using the strong and sharp scissors, trim the top of the bowl evenly, then cut it in half. This would be the pocket used to store your items.
Now take the cardboard sheet, and using a marker pen, draw a mast, sail, and cabins of the boat on the cardboard. Place the half-bowl in the position and draw around it to complete the boat. Now the boat was my choice, you can be a bit more creative and make any other design. If you do, please share it with us.
Cut the boat shape out of the cardboard using the scissor.Be very careful in doing so(kids should take the help of an elder here). Seal the cardboard with a coat of diluted PVA white glue and leave to dry.
Using the masking tape, attach the papier-mache bowl shape to the cardboard shape. Cover the sails and the back of the boat with layers of papier-mache and add another layer to the bowl. Leave in a warm place to dry completely.
Rub down lightly with fine-grade sandpaper, then prime with coats of white emulsion on the complete boat. Allow them to dry then decorate with acrylic paints. If you are not good at drawing then you can print out the designs and stick on the whole boat. Leave to dry. Once dry, attach an eyelet to the top of the mast. Spray the boat with varnish to give it a shine.
