Controversies in the movie, Padmavati
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s movie, Padmavati is making headlines everyday. Because making a historical film on famous rulers and queens’ in India is challenging. First of all, the controversy started from the initial shooting in Jaipur when a certain group of people protested against the film.
Reasons for the controversy:
Rani Padmini was the ideal female Rajput representation. She was a source of inspiration for poets and writers and also for the general people in Rajasthan. Same as Jodha Bai, Rani Padmini was brave and courageous. She stood for justice and honor for her kingdom and her religion. As a result, making a movie on her character and changing the content was the prime reason for the controversy.
Being a creative person, the director wanted to focus her story in a different light. Probably he must have felt the need to show her as a romantic person. But the people in general have a faith in historical characters. They were unable to digest the fact that she will ever love a person other than her husband. Another reason of controversy was her romance with a Muslim ruler.
According to history, Rani Padmini committed sati (mass suicide) after her husband’s death. Her husband, ruler of Mewar died in the battle against Alauddin Khilji. He was the Muslim ruler, romantically obsessed with Rani Padmini. Hence, showing a romance with the same Muslim ruler made people angry.
Furthermore the movie also became controversial for showing Alauddin Khilji as a homosexual man.
Theories for the protests:
The historical characters in India are people’s inspiration. Much as their bravery and honor, they were also a source for reminding people of their glorious past. In addition, these people took a pride in claiming them as their brave ancestors. Therefore once a film happens, challenges comes up immediately. Rather than being proud, these people will take notice of the film’s content.
Most noteworthy is the fact that, the film changed the traditional ideals. Almost the entire film is a different interpretation of the traditional Rajput kingdom. A brave Rajput queen romancing a Muslim ruler is indeed a challenge.
Yet whatever happens, we are all waiting for the film to release. So let’s hope for the best.
