Blue Whale Challenge- A dangerous adventure

Blue Whale Challenge– Video games and most specifically online games are often designed specifically, keeping in mind the pleasurable mindsets of those who are particularly in the age group of 13 and till the early 20s. It is an addictive genre that keeps their minds and eyes hooked, till they are able to conquer the various tasks and levels as provided by those games.

We do come across articles of moral policing and lessons that tend to preach about children of today’s age, moving away from innocent outdoor activities and instead of trying to lean on towards the online world be it watching porn, movies, series or playing games. This is not about writing endless words on those moral lessons as enough has already been said and written about. Rather it is about unlocking and trying to understand the whole hullabaloo involved around this online game called The Blue Whale.

Every time we browse through various news sites or in Facebook, one or even more than one article will be about this Blue Whale Challenge. There has been news about teenagers committing suicides or attempts to do so. Parents are worried, politicians being concerned and police involved in the search operations for those victims getting swayed away by those challenges set by this game.

Firstly I will try unlocking the confusion centred around this so-called game. This is a game that involves suicide as the major task :

  • Carve a specific phrase on the person’s own hand or arm.
  • Wake up at 4:20 a.m. and watch a scary video (sent by the curator.)
  • Make lengthwise cuts on the person’s own arm.
  • Draw a whale on a piece of paper
  • Write “yes” on the person’s own leg if ready to be a whale. Otherwise, they should cut themselves multiple times.
  • Secret task (written in code.)
  • Scratch (a message) on the person’s own arm.
  • Write a status online about being a whale.
  • Overcome a fear.
  • Get up at 4:20 and go to the roof.
  • Carve a whale on the person’s own hand.
  • Watch scary videos all day.
  • Listen to music the “curator” sends.
  • Cut your lip.
  • Poke the person’s own arm/hand with a needle.
  • Make yourself hurt or sick.
  • Go to a roof and stand on the edge.
  • Stand on a bridge.
  • Climb a crane.
  • At this step, the “curator” somehow checks to see if the participant is trustworthy.
  • Talk with a “whale” on Skype.
  • Sit down on a roof with legs dangling over the edge.
  • Another job that is in code.
  • A secret mission
  • Meet with a “whale.”
  • The “curator” assigns a date that the person will die.
  • Visit a railroad.
  • Do not talk with anyone all day.
  • Give an oath/vow about being a whale

After these steps, steps 30-49 involve watching horror movies and listening to music that the curator picks, talking to a whale, and making cuts. The last task is jumping off a building.

Various theories have been speculated around this game by the experts and researchers on different categories. Psychology has been the ultimate defence mechanism for trying to understand that “evil” mastermind behind this game as well as also those participants, or more specifically the victims. Below is a video trying to explain why the owner of this video thinks the tasks of this game works.

YouTube video on unlocking the psychology of this game

Many try to put the blame on the parents of those concerned victims being inattentive to their child’s needs or lack of communication between the both. There has also been speculation that the game is not merely about playing along but the curators behind this game hack the participants’ personal online accounts, be it their email address, contacts, social media accounts as well as even targeting their parents. Some have even gone to lengths to explain that the game has a hypnotizing power that captures the participants’ minds and making them do those tasks unconsciously.

Nevertheless, as a word of caution, do not try to be a detective in this game or even waste your time searching and understanding about it. Enough of news items are already laid in hand about this game and its dangerous consequences and even viral in WhatsApp in India or some other groups, about receiving any suspicious links and not to open out of mindless curiosity. We can’t lecture kids and teenagers about morality in today’s age as half of them are least bother about it, it is better to let them indulge in some more interesting activities that makes them truly happy.
