Mawlynnong is a village located in Meghalaya in Northeast India. A beautiful village, this is also the Asia’s cleanest place. The village became a popular tourist attraction for its cleanliness. One would not find any traces of dirt in that place. Furthermore, the people are very conscious. They are also fluent in English. The place received an award for its cleanliness by Discover India. They gave the title as, “Asia’s Cleanest Village.”

The village has cobbled streets, bordered with thatched Khasi (the tribe) huts. The lawns are well kept, planted with flowers of different kinds.

Bamboo baskets are at every corner to maintain the cleanliness. Moreover, the villagers make sure to remove any litter, thrown on the streets.

They have a unique “Machan” in their huts.
Furthermore, the huts in that place resemble a typical Khasi house. Therefore, they have a unique space called, “Machan” in the local language. Machan is a comfortable space for sitting purpose. Space is built with bamboo and tied together with jute. This space is ideal for spending windy evenings.
The sky view is the highest point in the place. It is a tourist’s favourite’s spot. If you feel like exploring Meghalaya’s breathtaking view, this view is perfect. It was Rishot Khongthohrem, who was the creator of this viewpoint. Initially, he thought of the idea and built the view along with the help of the other residents. Through this view, one would experience the pleasure of looking down at Treetops. Also, if the weather is clear, one would be able to view the canopy of Meghalaya’s forests. Moreover, bamboo is used for the viewpoint. Here, trees are connected to make a criss-cross bamboo bridge.

Mawlynnong is also popular for the living root bridge. First of all, this is a completely natural phenomenon. This bridge is 500 years old. Once a rubber tree’s roots got twisted. It happened in such a way that a bridge was formed. Now, the villagers use the bridge to commute from one place to another. Such root bridges are also found in areas of Meghalaya.
A welcome sign that truly welcomes you.
Once you enter Mawlynnong, there will be a welcome sign, with the words, “Mawlynnong- God’s Own Garden”. After you reach the village, all the guests will be welcomed warmly. They will yell, “good morning” to greet you. After you leave, the villagers will themselves bid you farewell and ask you to visit again.
